Your wedding doesn’t have to be traditional. From complex etiquette rules (such as the number of bridesmaids and groomsmen needed) to the color of the bride’s gown, most of the "laws" governing weddings are much more relaxed these days.

Your wedding cake is no exception to the rule. You can choose a cake that is as traditional or as unconventional as you want – but, if you’re leaning more towards the traditional route, these flavors are very popular!

Inspiration for your wedding cake decision:

  • Vanilla: probably the most common and beloved wedding cake flavor. It’s a safe choice from all points of view. Everybody loves it, so you "can't miss" with this choice!
  • Lemon: a bit more unconventional, but still on the traditional side. Lemon cakes are great for summer weddings – precisely because they are so refreshing and tasty.
  • Chocolate: sure, it's not traditionally associated with weddings – but it can be and has been done (either for the wedding cake itself or for the groom’s cake). A good, moist chocolate cake is hard to resist!
  • White chocolate: for chocolate enthusiasts who want to stick to “white” for the wedding, this is a really great and delicious option.
  • Red velvet: popular due to its amazingly vibrant color, red velvet cake makes for a romantic and beautiful choice – especially when paired with frosting and filling that complement both the color and flavor of the batter. Yum!

As the bride, you are bound to have wedding epiphanies!

When you begin planning your Big Day, you will be struck with a great number of epiphanies that perhaps you never thought you’d experience.

A casual affair can be just as stressful as a fancier one. In the end, the number of choices and details to handle stays more or less the same, so you will have to address them all. What are some of the most revealing things about planning your Big Day?

  • People will start giving you wedding planning advice – regardless of whether or not you actually ask for it. Out of the blue, unsolicited consultations might happen. Try not to get overwhelmed with all the tips and tricks they give you – even when they don’t actually make sense to your particular situation. Stay true to your original vision and go from there.
  • Your season choice is crucial. It will determine which are the freshest flowers and foods for that time. Your bridal gown, bridesmaids’  dresses, venue, pricing, backup plan and a myriad of other things are also secondary details to consider after choosing a time of year. Make sure you choose the right wedding season for your own “I Do’s”!
  • You will talk about your wedding often. Colors, flowers, fabrics and food are some of the constants. And, people around you should listen politely, even if they don’t agree. You will be excited and truly happy, even when the stress and anxiety rise to almost uncontrollable levels.

Weddings can be quite expensive.

From the floral arrangements to wedding attire, from choosing a venue to tasting the food, there are many costs involved in planning a wedding – when you multiply that by the number of guests, you realize just how pricy a wedding can get.

Who pays for the wedding? There are a few options:

  • The Bride’s Parents: Traditionally, the bride’s parents pay for (mostly) everything. While this alleviates financial stress, it can also cause rifts in decision making and creating a wedding that’s authentically yours. If the groom’s parents can pay for certain items, such as wedding bands and rehearsal dinner, it may be easier to balance out expenses.
  • Both sets of parents pay for (mostly) everything while the couple contributes: Considering most couples are young and may not have created wealth or savings, it’s a natural step to ask parents to help with wedding expenses. Contributing what you can to the cost as a whole can also help you gain more control over what happens and where money is spent.
  • The couple splits the wedding costs: If you want full independence and want to ensure your wedding is truly about you and your choices, you can choose to split the wedding costs between the two of you. From a financial standpoint it may be more difficult, but more and more modern couples are choosing this route. It offers enough freedom to do whatever they wish while also accepting and considering suggestions from others.

Plan your wedding together as a couple! Taking the time to create special moments within the planning process will make the entire experience more enjoyable instead of stressful.

  • Communicate. Talk about each aspect of the wedding to gain perspective. The budget is generally the first thing discussed and how to spend it. Some things have more significance than others when it comes to the Big Day. A careful consideration of this is important.  Name the top 5 things that matter the most to each person and go from there.
  • Split the responsibilities. There will be tasks that you both dread, but there will also be many things to tackle that you didn’t realize were enjoyable. From choosing the menu to picking the groomsmen attire, don’t be afraid to split some tasks while also figuring it out together.
  • Take time away from the wedding. It’s exciting, but exhausting. Remember that no matter how involved you are in the process, you should set aside quality time together to relax and decompress.
